Cleaning beaches on Oahu's North Shore today. Gorgeous weather and the ocean is shimmering and crystal clear.
Too bad plastic has washed up all around us as far the eye can see... Cant wait for the massive cleanup effort tomorrow in Kailua as part of Makai Fest! Dont forget to come check in to pick up supplies tomorrow at Lanikai Brewery from 9 to 11 a.m. Going to be epic!

Nothing quite as satisfying as a sunrise beach clean up at Lanikai Beach, Oahu, Hawaii! And love this gentle reminder a local resident hung up on their fence near the beach! Take heed folks!!!
Another ghost net we got off the beach ta few weeks back in Waimanalo. Tons of marine debris is washing up and with reports of another Humpback Whale entangled by a net on Sunday, March 3, 2019 in the Molokai Channel, there is no time like the present to get out there and lend a hand.
When we arrived today Sunday Hussey from www.808cleanups.org had already cut the whole net up...by herself!...but we were there in time to help her drag it out to the parking lot for pick up. Get out there and lend a hand a do your part today and everyday! Malama aina! Been super busy lately and haven't been able to beach clean as often as we'd like, so Kass and I got up at 4 a.m. today and hit Kahana Bay for sunrise...and it definitely didn't disappoint!!! Today was UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Had more than 20 people come out to join us today in making a sweep of Oahu's Windward Coastline from Kailua to Kahuku cleaning the beaches at Kahana Bay, Pounders Beach in Laie, and Kahuku Beach. We removed over 2,000 lbs of ocean plastic, nets and ropes, fish traps, plastic straws, propane tanks, car tires, and all sorts of other debris. ...And not only did we lend our time to do something good for the ocean and the environment, we all had a TOTAL BLAST doing it!!! Thanks again for joining gang and great work! Amazing beach clean up day with FOUR Towson High School graduates and our crew on the North Shore of Oahu! Easily removed over 1,000 pounds of marine debris today.
Please stop using plastic unless absolutely unnecessary! Cant thank Marine Biologist Jen Davidson enough for inviting me to join her and fellow scientists on Coconut Island (aka 'Giligan's Island') today for an island cleanup. Such an honor to finally check out the island and to get a chance to do some good with the real pros!
We pulled several nets off the coastline and found sections of rusted out anchor chain, plastic debris, and some rusted out old beer cans with pop tops...all of which is now properly disposed of! Several hundred pounds of debris were removed and already looking forward to another opportunity to join this great group of folks out on Giligan's Island! Great job crew!!! In honor of Zack's Birthday we decided to do an East Side sweep of Oahu's dirtiest beaches. We were able to remove a large amount of plastic from Kahana Bay and Pounders Beach.
Joining us on the day was newest Ambassador, Kalei, and Al's Mom who was in visiting from North Carolina. Nothing like volunteering and doing good work to protect the environment as a way to celebrate your birthday - Way to go Zack!!! Great underwater reef cleanup today with Leslie Alpert today in Waimanalo and got to do a brief sweep of the beach with Kalei and her visiting family!
Found an assortment of golf balls, plastic, rope and netting on the reef, and several heavy pieces of metal on the beach. Al Smith, his Mom, Leslie, Kass, and Golden Boy Wrigley today in Waimanalo!
The strong winds are littering Nalo with ocean plastic at a rate we've almost never seen before. Its an all-hands-on-deck situation this weekend! Grab a few buckets and some buddies and get after it folks! |
