Cut up and cleared a massive ghost net off the beach today at Ka'a'awa.
Ghost nets entangle monk seals, sea turtles, and other endangered marine life and greatly damage the fragile coral reef.

See something wrong with this pic??...We all need to make a serious effort to reduce the amount of plastic we are using.
Hawaii's State Legislature is considering various bans on single use plastic this year. Reach out and contact your Reps in support! Need help finding out who your Reps are? Check out VoterEngage.com! And before leaving for the day we made sure to show our gratitude for living in this amazing place with a quick beach clean up. Another great day in paradise! Cleaning the beaches at Kahana Bay today. Tons of plastic is washing up this week with heavy winds and rains hitting the Windward side. Grab some buddies and some buckets and get after it folks! With the Tradewinds picking back up Kailua and Kalama Beaches are getting pounded with waves of plastic washing in from the North Pacific Gyre - aka 'The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.'
This golden retriever has endless energy and wanted to keep cleaning for hours...so naturally, I obliged! But more plastic is coming in every hour! Get out there with some buddies and lend a hand folks! Sorting and cleaning ocean plastics and other marine debris this morning to assist a local Boy Scout Troop with a conservation related trash art project. Amazing to think some of this plastic has been circulating in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch for 7 years before reaching Hawaii... Had a great group out to do a multi-stop beach cleanup along Oahu's heavy-hit Windward Coast today! At Kahana Bay the team collected 16 buckets of ocean plastic that is now no longer choking out the reef and killing marine life! Next stop - Kahuku! At Kahuku the team removed over 1,000 lbs of plastic and ropes and netting from Oahu's most secluded and most heavily impacted beach.
As Kahuku is North East facing and is the Northernmost point on Oahu it collects more marine debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch than any other place on Oahu. The team worked super hard today and had a blast doing it! On the ride back we all stopped in Hau'ula for pizza and burgers and ate like a famished bunch of hyennas! Great time and already looking forward to the next big team mission! Grab your buddies and some buckets and get a cleanup of your own going soon!!! Riding epic waves of ocean trash is kind of our jam!
Love this unbelievable and incredibly meaningful art by Ethan Estess (www.instagram.com/ethan.estess.art.science) entitled 'Plastic Free Pipeline' which was previously on display at Ehukai Beach Park for Pipe Masters in 2018, serving to raise awareness of the awful impacts on our oceans from irresponsible commercial fishing habits and our plastic-addicted consumption habits. Reduce your plastic use, clean a beach, and know your fisherman. Multi-stop beach clean up with fellow Towson High School graduate and legendary bassist from All Time Low, Zach Merrick amd Kassidy Kawa on Oahu's North Shore!
Highlight was finding two dozen lead fishing weights stuck on the reef at Kahuku. ..What a day!!! The first pile pictured was collected by other good samaritans.
We used our cart to wheel away as much as we could. It's a team effort and it takes all of us to make a difference. Grab some friends and get out there folks!!! @ Turtle Bay Resort |
