The Simple Sand Sifter Design Experiment was ultimately a success with the exception of our bucket and screen idea.
The 'Hand Picker 3000' which is the wooden dowel ($4) + simple strainer ($8.95) + blue duct tape ($8 large roll) worked the best at gathering quarter size pieces of plastic up to 6", while the pre-fashioned wire frame net ($9) was highly efficient but quite tedious to use on micro plastics the size of a quarter and below. The bucket and screen was not very efficent as the screen seemed to allow the wetter sand to clump and gum up the works. We won't be using that design again, but we will use the bucket as a reusable rubbish bin with its convenient handle to be used in concert with the 'Hand Picker 3000.'
We are designing plans for larger, roll-able Sand Sifters now with anticipated prototypes to be ready for use and testing at the conclusion of the upcoming week. We'd love to find a design that works well enough to be considered for reproduction and donation to various communities along the windward coast.
